October 20, 2021 -- Through a grant from the York County Community Foundation (YCCF), the York County Planning Commission (YCPC) has launched a pilot program in the Barshinger Creek Watershed --Better Farms Cleaner Water. YCPC is working with stormwater management and agricultural specialists to help landowners address resource concerns, many of which result from stormwater runoff. The goal of the program is to help improve local water quality in the East Branch of the Codorus Creek watershed.
Beginning this fall, a select group of property owners have the opportunity to schedule a farm visit with an agricultural specialist who will take a fresh look at each operation -- a farm health checkup of sorts. At no cost to the landowner, the specialist will conduct a site visit and provide an assessment of land practices as they relate to water quality and stormwater management. Information on potential erosion control, nutrient management, and other best management practices (BMPs) will be shared, along with the benefits of updating older conservation plans or, if applicable, creating an entirely new plan for farming operations.
An added incentive to participate is the award of ten $1,000 vouchers to help with conservation planning or BMP implementation. In addition, farmers will be directed to funding opportunities that would best meet their goals with assistance provided by the Center for Water Quality Excellence.
An educational field day will also be held in early spring 2022.
