In this two-part series of articles published in 2016, Lori Yeich of the Pennsylvania Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DCNR) takes on the integration of new stormwater regulations under MS4 and TMDL, community/borough revitalization, and funding integrated solutions to achieve multiple environmental and economic goals.
Part 1, Enhancing Your Community's Green Infrastructure, discusses the benefits or large-scale, holistic projects such as parks that also include rain gardens and pervious pavement. Other applications include downtown revitalization with street trees and rain gardens that can benefit boroughs and communities by attracting visitors and enhancing land and home values while improving stormwater quality. Yeich includes a lengthy list of potential public funding sources for these projects.
Part 2, Implementing GI Infrastructure Into Stormwater Management features successful case studies in Carlisle, Etna and Wrightsville boroughs as they each used funding from various agencies to holistically and sustainably revitalize their communities and clean up waterways.
